Poll Results: The Connecticourt has ruled

Attention fellow Connecticuters, Nutmeggers, and Connecticutensians:

The masses have have spoken, and an overwhelming plurality (40%) have denominated the citizens of Connecticut as Connecticutians, and it seems only fair for us, Nutmeg State residents and lovers of democracy, to follow the will of the people, disregarding the underwhelming majority, whose votes have been split among the gentilic designations Connecticuter (30%), Nutmegger (20%), and Connecticutensian (10%).

I will be the first to officially adopt this demonym; I hope you will follow me as I follow the people.

Poll Results: Be it resolved...

Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent Land of Yajeev survey.

Readers were asked, "What is (are) your New Year Resolution(s)"?

Perhaps the results were unfairly skewed by the subject matter of a few of my recent posts, but the resolution most often selected was the classic: "Lose weight." I wish I could offer some helpful tips (other than the big 2: diet and exercise) for successful weight loss to the 40% of respondents who have so resolved. I'm afraid that any sure-fire weight-loss strategies I could propose would involve diet pills or limb removal, both of which should be approved by your personal physician.* I just hope that when you have succeeded in becoming lighter and fitter, you will remember all the good times we've had at the Land of Yajeev and you don't go off in search of a slimmer, sexier blogger.

33% of those surveyed resolved to "Visit the Land of Yajeev more often", and 25% hoped to "Comment at the Land of Yajeev more often." With readers' overwhelming commitment to become more involved in the blog, the Land of Yajeev may soon surpass the popularity of MySpace and Facebook. Before long, this site will be your hub for social networking, video sharing, scientific literature browsing, web searching, and instant messaging. Think of all the merchandising and ad revenues...

I'd like to think of this site as a sort of online support group for mishappers and recovering mishappers (such as the 33% of survey respondents who resolved to "Suffer fewer mishaps"). My blog is largely a repository for the mishaps I suffer. I write about my own misfortunes and misadventures so that others may learn from my experiences and avoid replicating the innumerable errors of my ways (for a highly abbreviated selection of yajeev misphaps, click here or here or here or here).

A third of my readers resolved to develop their critical thinking skills, hand-eye coodination, spatial reasoning, and patience in the coming year. That is, they resolved to "Play more video games".

Apparently, most survey respondents are satisfied with their smoking and television habits. Only one individual committed to "Quit smoking" (as far as resolutions go, it's an oldie but goodie). Similarly, just one person resolved to "Watch less tv", and nobody opted to"Watch more tv" in the coming year (which is shocking, considering the recent premiere of The Moment of Truth).

Good luck to all who have resolved, especially those who have resolved to visit and comment at the Land of Yajeev more often.

Poll Results: 2 web surfers devastated; millions of other internet readers oblivious, unaffected

When asked how often readers visit the Land of Yajeev blogsite, 18% of poll respondents indicated that they check in more than 10 times per day. To these two diehards, I offer the sincerest of apologies for the dearth of bloggings in the past two weeks. I can make excuses: busyness, stress, travels… but I know that my readers hold me (as I do myself) to a higher standard of blogging fidelity.

54% of my readers check the site once to four times a day, and they have no doubt been dissatisfied (but surely not as disheartened as the abovementioned LoY fanatics) by my recent lack of blog-related activity.

27% indicated that they check the site less than once per day. These are the casual observers who stop by to check out the view. I hope you like what you see, and I wish you many happy returns.

Poll Results: Pottermania sweeps Land of Yajeev…

…followed closely by Hendersonmania and hairdressermania.


When asked who their favorite Harry was, 35% of Land of Yajeev readers selected magical boy wonder Harry Potter, which isn’t all that surprising given the mega-million dollar ad campaign.














The real winner in this poll is Bigfoot Harry of Harry and the Hendersons, played by the late Kevin Peter Hall. You might also recognize Hall from his role in Predator and Predator 2 (he played the Predator). Even without the ongoing publicity and endless promotion, the hairy Harry’s following is as vibrant as ever with 30% of blog readers selecting him as their favorite.









25% of Land of Yajeev readers chose my wife’s hairdresser Harry as their favorite. Good choice. And, no, I have not logged onto my own site from five different computers to vote for her hairdresser. Although, honey, if you are reading this, your hair looks as lovely as ever. Thanks to all who voted for Harry the Hairdresser, from the bottom of my heart.




“Give ‘em hell” Harry S. Truman was the favorite Harry of 10% of poll respondents. The buck stops here!







Bringing up the rear of vote getters were the multi-talented Harry Shearer (actor and voiceover artist) and Harry Anderson (actor and sideshow magician). Each received 5% of the votes (i.e. one apiece).





















Speaking of magicians, Harry Houdini did not receive a single vote. It seems he has disappeared into relative anonymity, at least among Land of Yajeev readers.




If you’re doing the math, you’ll notice that the total value adds up to 110%. Before you cry "Fuzzy math!" or "Election fraud!" and demand to have the voting machines and chads checked, remember that voters were allowed, in this poll, to make more than one selection. n=20.

Poll Result: 22% correctly find Robert DeNiro funnier than a barrel of monkeys

Which leaves the remaining 77% (where does that extra 1% get off to???) voting for the barrel of monkeys.

Readers were asked who was funnier: Robert DeNiro in The King of Comedy, Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation, Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber, or Will Ferrell in Anchorman.

Tied for first place with 33% of the total electorate were Chevy Chase as bumbling but usually well-meaning family man Clark W. Griswold in Christmas Vacation (sequel to Vacation and European Vacation, prequel to Vegas Vacation and the cousin-Eddie-centric Christmas Vacation II) and Will Ferrell as the illustrious San Diego newsman Ron Burgundy in Anchorman. 22% of my readers (you must be related to me, I’m sure) selected Robert DeNiro in his little known role as aspiring comic Rupert Pupkin (“often misspelled and mispronounced”) in the King of Comedy as the funniest (“Rupert Pupkin, ladies and gentlemen, Rupert Pupkin!”). Surprisingly, only a single voter (comprising a substantial 11% of respondents—every vote counts) deemed Jim Carrey’s portrayal as Lloyd Christmas worthy of the funniest designation.

Poll Results: Science, alcohol favorites among Land of Yajeev readers

Thanks to all who took part in the survey on this site. This time, you were asked: "What is your favorite aspect of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae?"

Perhaps the most significant result is that votership was up nearly 70% from the last survey (n=10).

40% of respondents reported their favorite aspect is the service of yeast as a model genetic organism, allowing researchers to unravel the mysteries of eukaryotic biochemistry at the level of the single cell. Scientific discoveries originally made in yeast have contributed to our understanding and, in some cases, the treatment of complex human conditions like diabetes, cancer, aging, and Alzheimer's disease.

An equal lot selected yeast's ability to ferment sugar to alcohol as their favorite.

That these two options were tied for first among those surveyed shouldn't surprise me. I've never seen as much science discussed or alcohol imbibed as when I attended the yeast genetics and biochemistry meeting last summer. Not nearly as much bread was consumed as beer at the convention, and this is consistent with half as many selecting how yeast "makes bread rise" as their favorite aspect of the multi-talented unicellular organism.

Scientists often refer to "TAPOYG": The Awesome Power Of Yeast Genetics. Based on these survey results, I'd like to amend the acronym to: "TAPOYGAFASMBR": The Awesome Power Of Yeast Genetics And Fermentation And Sometimes Making Bread Rise.

Poll Results: Half of Land of Yajeev readers repeat offenders

Thanks to all who participated in the survey on my site. I asked you, “How did you find this blog?”

The response was overwhelming. 6 of you voted in my poll, and a whopping 50% of you reported that you had linked to this site from the old MySpace-based blog.

A “really great friend” informed a third of the respondents about this site. No “not so great friend[s]” spread the word about the Land of Yajeev, which is probably for the best.

Only one surveyed was referred here by direct mail, and 16% Google searched “land of yajeev”. Unfortunately, no one seems to have found this site by reference from other blog sites or from the radio and television advertising campaign. Clearly, the marketing department needs some help; fortunately, my pop is a great marketing strategist.

While I haven’t yet subjected these data to rigorous statistical analysis, with an n=6, the results can only be described as significant, if not scientific.
